FAQs

What do you do?

I design print and online publications, including magazines, newspapers, newsletters, brochures and reports. Please take a look at my portfolio for some examples of my work.

How much will it cost?

In estimating the cost to design an entire publication from start to finish, I work on the basis that it generally takes about a day to lay out 10 editorial pages. Template design is also required for a first edition or redesign, which adds another couple of days onto the process. In addition, any fonts or stock library photography that may be required are charged separately. For an approximate cost for your project, please use my quote calculator.

What services do you provide?

For what I consider to be a fair rate within the graphic design industry, I will provide you with a professional and cost-effective service, taking your project from its initial concept to the delivery of files to your designated printer or online platform, overseeing the design, picture sourcing and page layout. I also have editorial experience and I am accomplished at writing and subediting. I pride myself on my ability to manage my work efficiently, and to maintain excellent communication with my clients throughout the entire production process.

What is your workflow process?

I work remotely using Mac-based Adobe software. Clients provide me with a flatplan for every issue, plus all of the content required. Although images can be supplied, I often have to source photography myself (using image libraries, such as iStockphoto). As I complete each layout, I share PDF proofs with the client, who then provide me with amendments (either in a Word document or using a PDF mark-up). Once the publication is finalised and approved, I output high resolution files, and submit these to the client's designated printer, as well as to online publishing platforms. I correspond with my clients by email and phone, and use cloud servers (such as Dropbox) for file-sharing.

What is template design?

Every publication has its own template on which the main layouts are based, in order for it to have a consistent look and feel. Template design involves the setting up of the specific page size, the number of text columns, the fonts that will be used, as well as the standard folio elements (i.e. headers/footers and page numbers) etc.

What is a high resolution image?

For print purposes, high resolution images are required. These have a resolution of 300dpi (dots per inch), which relates to the number of printed dots that form an image. In contrast, a computer screen has a resolution of 72dpi, therefore an image taken from the internet would be inadequate for print use.
